Off-grid Testing of Home Installations

Is your home ready for island operation? We test it before it matters.

Carried out by authorized electrical contractor with in-house power electronics development. Based in Vejle, Denmark.

Many homes have solar panels and a home battery, but nobody knows whether the system can actually supply the house when the grid goes down, or whether it disconnects and reconnects correctly. We test this on site with our own test equipment.

The installation is safely disconnected from the public grid and supplied instead by our bidirectional AC/DC and DC/AC converter. The converter forms its own grid that simulates the utility grid, so we can control voltage and frequency and trigger grid failures under controlled conditions.

What we test

  • Disconnection on grid loss (anti-islanding): do the inverters and battery disconnect as required, and how fast?
  • Transition to island mode: do battery and solar supply the house without interruption?
  • Reconnection and resynchronization when the grid returns
  • Response to abnormal voltage and frequency, and the other grid services the inverter is configured for
  • Loading in island mode: can the system start and run the largest loads in the house?

You receive a written report with measurement results, an assessment of whether the installation is off-grid ready and compliant, and what needs fixing, if anything. The test is relevant for new solar and battery systems, before converting to island operation, and whenever you want to be sure your backup supply works.

How the test works

  1. We review the system: inverters, battery, switchboard and settings.
  2. The installation is safely disconnected from the public grid.
  3. Our converter is connected and forms a simulated grid that the house runs on.
  4. We perform grid failures, voltage and frequency deviations and reconnection while measuring.
  5. The house is reconnected to the grid, and you receive the report.

Who is the test for?

  • New solar and battery systems where you want documented proof that they work as promised.
  • Homes being converted to island operation or backup supply.
  • Farms and businesses that depend on supply during power cuts.
  • Installers and dealers who want independent verification.
